Dr. Todd Johnston has been dedicated to improving people's vision through refractive surgical techniques since 1994, when he became involved in research projects at Harvard's Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary while still a medical student. That interest culminated in a distinguished career as the chief of refractive surgery at the United States Air Force Academy, a position he held until this summer, when he joined the Clearly LASIK team. He currently resides in Seattle with his wife, Melanie, and their daughter, Olivia.
Dr. Johnston graduated from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina. He completed a medical internship at Harvard's Cambridge Hospital, followed by a year as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force, where he was a physician to the pilots and radar teams of the AWACS flying squadrons in Oklahoma City. Dr. Johnston then completed his general ophthalmology training at the University of Alabama at the Birmingham Eye Foundation Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, where he served as chief resident. This was followed by two years of subspecialty training in corneal disease and refractive surgery at the University of Southern California Doheny Eye Institute in Los Angeles.
As chief of refractive surgery at the United States Air Force Academy, Dr. Johnston was one of only a very few surgeons in the world dedicated to treating future U.S. Air Force fighter pilots. He has performed thousands of refractive procedures and is also an expert in corneal transplantation and cataract surgery. He was one of only a handful of surgeons performing LASIK surgery in the U.S. military and treated patients that came from all over the world to have their laser eye surgery at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Dr. Johnston is certified on and has performed surgeries using the VISX® and Bausch & Lomb® laser systems.
